Important updates

  • On 29.06.2025 we received the news of some significant cash donations, as a result of which we had to review our £15,000 target on Mysadaqa and reduced it to £9,000.
  • On 30.06.2025 we officially reached our first target of £15,000 (both in cash donations and through Mysadaqa). Alhamdulillah, thanks to your invaluable support we hit that target 1 whole month before our deadline!
  • On 15.07.2025 we officially finished raising the additional funds we needed to complete this entire project and closed off the donations on this page.
  • Please note that we shall continue to update this page with pictures of the construction progress - so if you would like to stay updated, simply keep coming back to it and scroll down for the latest photos!

Background

In Eravur, a city on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka, the local Shia ithna ashari community - who essentially comprises of brothers and sisters who reverted to Shiism - is in need of our help. A plot has been purchased for them to build a hussainiyah to carry on religious activities such as majalis, mawalid and Islamic classes, but they are now in need of additional funds for the construction of such centre. The amount needed urgently to pay the builders by August is of £15,000.

Once this target would have been met, we will need to raise an additional £6,000 for the hussainiyah to be fully operational. This would notably include the painting and final touches of the building, electricity and water installation, as well as the construction of a one hectare fence. We shall close the donations whenever we would have gathered enough funds (adding up both online and offline donations).

This is an important sadaqah jariyah project, where you can play a crucial role in the future of this isolated Shia community. We pray your contribution, no matter how small, serves as a source of continuous blessings for you and your loved ones.

We shall endeavour to update this page with the progress made thanks to your donations. May Allah (swt) bless you and always increase your tawfeeq.

How is sadaqah jariyah different from sadaqah?

Sadaqah jariyah is a continuous, ongoing charity — a type of sadaqa that keeps benefiting others over time, and the reward continues even after the giver dies. This concept is present in the holy qur'an, in surah Ya-sin (36:12).

In reference to sadaqah jariyah, Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (as) said in Wasā'il al-Shīʿa:

"Six things benefit a person after death: a righteous child who seeks forgiveness for him, a copy of the Qur'an he leaves behind, a well he dug, a tree he planted, charity he gave while alive such that it continues after his death, and knowledge he passed on."

By contributing to this project, every salah, every majlis, every tear shed or lecture held in this future hussainiyah shall be counted in your scale of deeds.

FAQs

  • Will 100% of the donations made go towards the construction?

Yes! We shall cover the transfering fees to Sri Lanka from our own pocket, so you can be rest assured that 100% of your donations will go towards this cause.

  • Is any organisation or marja behind this project?

No, this is a 100% grassroots and fully independent initiative and it shall remain this way to not only ensure complete autonomy of this community, but also full transparency as to where donations are going. We are directly and constantly in touch with the community on the ground.

  • Why build a 1 hectare fence around the hussainiyah?

The vision is to make this place sustainable and self-sufficient. Along with the hussainiyah building, there are also 50 coconut trees on the plot that was purchased. Coconuts are an essential ingredient in the local cuisine and a safe investment in Sri Lanka. The money generated from the sale of these coconuts will allow the centre to cover its bills and maintenance costs in the future insha'Allah, in a way that it won't be dependent on foreign funding or support.

  • Why are you using Mysadaqa to crowdfunding?

Mysadaqa is a Shia-owned non-profit platform that is Sharia compliant and doesn't take any fees, unless you choose to donate to it.

  • Are you accepting cash donations as well?

Yes - please contact us and we can arrange for cash donations whenever feasible insha'Allah.
