Tanzania Water Project

The village of Mwalkiponda-Mkinga Leo is located 20 kms from Tanga, on the highway to Horohoro (Tanzania-Kenya border). With a population size of 1,765, the villagers face difficulty in accessing clean and regular suppliers of drinking water. With a few collection points supplying drinking water once a week (barely), most villagers have to purchase water from vendors costing from SH 500 per 20 litre can. During drought, the prices go up to Sh1,500. The major sources of water are reservoirs which fill up during the rainy season. The current long drought condition prevailing in Tanga Region has resulted in acute shortage of water, with most reservoirs having dried up. The situation is so serious that many farmers have had to dispose their animal stocks, before they lose whatever they have. The project aims to provide a long term water solution for the village. Scope of work: 1. Borehole excavated - 130m deep 2. Electrical submersible water pump installed 3. Water tower assembled 4. 5,000 litres water tank provided 5. Electrical and plumbing works completed 6. Tiling and painting carried out The cost of a water solution as described above is $7,500 - as such, we hope to assist in this village and the adjacent village by raising funds for 2 water solutions. The water projects are always done with full cooperation and involvement of the local village authorities. Once completed, the project is handed over to village committee for care and maintenance. This way no family or organization may claim ownership.
